What Couples Need to Know
If you’re planning a San Diego engagement session, wedding, or couples photoshoot between May and June, there’s a good chance you’ve heard the terms May Gray and June Gloom floating around. And if you’re not from Southern California, you might be wondering… what does that actually mean? Is my photoshoot going to be ruined if it’s cloudy? Will I still get those dreamy San Diego sunset photos?
The short answer: cloudy weather does not automatically mean bad photos. In fact, some of my favorite images are created on overcast days because the soft, diffused light can create a romantic and timeless feel.
However, there is something important to understand: clouds completely change the way light looks in your photos. As a photographer who attempts to create "natural" photos, I don’t force every session to look like a bright, golden sunset if the weather isn’t giving us that. My goal is to photograph things as they truly look while creating images that feel intentional, authentic, and true to the moment.
So before you stress about a cloudy San Diego forecast, here’s exactly what May Gray and June Gloom mean for your photoshoot.
WHAT IS MAY GRAY AND JUNE GLOOM?
May Gray and June Gloom are seasonal weather patterns that happen along the Southern California coast, especially in areas like San Diego, Orange County, and Los Angeles. During late spring and early summer, cool ocean temperatures create a layer of marine clouds that often roll in overnight and linger into the morning or even throughout the day.
May Gray typically happens during—you guessed it—May, while June Gloom is the more well-known version that continues into June. The important thing to know:
- It’s usually not rain.
- It’s not a storm.
- It’s not “bad weather.”
- It’s simply a cloudy marine layer caused by coastal conditions.
For everyday life, it can actually make San Diego feel cooler and more comfortable. But for photography, it changes the way light behaves and how your photos turn out.

Why May Gray & June Gloom Matter for Your Photoshoot
Light is the biggest factor in photography.
A lot of people assume photographers can just “fix” anything in editing, but the reality is that editing cannot create light that wasn’t there. The way the sun interacts with your location, your skin tones, the background, and the sky is what creates the feeling of an image.
On a sunny San Diego evening, you may get:
- Warm golden sunlight
- Glowing skin tones
- Long dramatic shadows
- Colorful skies
- A bright, vibrant sunset
During May Gray or June Gloom, you may get:
- Soft, even lighting
- More muted colors
- A cooler, more editorial feeling
- A sky without much visible color
- Less contrast and less golden light
Neither is better they are simply different.
My photography style is very natural and true-to-life. I edit my images to enhance what was already there, not completely transform the weather into something it wasn’t. If your dream photos include a glowing orange sunset, colorful skies, or that classic California golden-hour look, it’s important to understand that you may not get that during a heavy marine layer. And that’s okay — but it’s something we should talk about before your session.
WhAT IF I WANT A SUNSET SESSION?
This is one of the biggest questions I get: “How do I know if we’ll actually get a pretty sunset?” The honest answer? We don’t know for sure until we’re there. The light in San Diego is constantly changing, and things like cloud coverage, humidity, and the marine layer all affect the colors and overall look of the sunset.
One thing that surprises people about San Diego is how dramatically the weather can vary from one area to another. You might see clear blue skies inland, but the coastline can have a completely different forecast because of the marine layer. A sunny day in one part of San Diego does not always mean a glowing golden sunset at the beach.
You can check sunset predictions, weather apps, and local sunset reports to get a general idea of the conditions, but even those can’t guarantee exactly what the sky will do.
If your dream photos include a glowing golden sunset, colorful skies, and that classic California beach look, I always recommend staying flexible with your session date if the forecast is looking uncertain. Rescheduling to a day with better sunset potential can make a huge difference in achieving the exact look you’re hoping for.
Of course, if you love a softer, moodier, more editorial feel, a cloudy San Diego evening can still create absolutely beautiful images (as seen throughout this blog post!).

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY SESSION IS DURING JUNE GLOOM?
If your session is outdoors and you’re hoping for sunset photos, we have a few options:
Option 1: Embrace the cloudy look
Overcast beach photos can be absolutely beautiful. The soft light creates a romantic, almost film-like feeling and allows the focus to stay completely on you.
Option 2: Adjust the timing
Sometimes moving your session earlier can help us find better light or a break in the clouds. I actually love a mid day beach session, the direct light can be beautiful!
Option 3: Choose a different location
If your dream photos include warm sunlight, we may want to consider a location that is not along the coast and is more inland.
If we’re shooting somewhere like a venue, home, or indoor location, May Gray and June Gloom usually matter much less because we are controlling the environment differently.
DON'T PANIC - YOUR PHOTOS WILL STILL BE BEAUTIFUL
If you’re planning a San Diego wedding, engagement session, or couples photoshoot during May Gray or June Gloom, don’t panic. Cloudy weather does not mean bad photos.
Some of the most emotional, timeless images are created when the weather is imperfect. The key is understanding what kind of images you’re hoping for and making sure your expectations match what the weather can realistically provide.
If you love soft, romantic, editorial images, a cloudy San Diego day might be exactly what you need. But if your dream is golden sunlight, glowing skies, and a classic California sunset, we’ll want to be intentional about timing, location, and having a backup plan.
